remember president obama's controversial pastor, his ex-pastor, the reverend jeremiah wright. tonight the, the drudge report is touting a report by the daily caller of what drudge calls the quote, unscrubbed video of a speech by then senator obama. he was speaking back in 2007 the a conference of black clergy at virginia's hampton university, a gathering that included reverend wright. this is reportedly part of the tape. >> and then i've got to give a special shout-out to my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. he's a friendnd a great leader. please, everybody, give an extraordinary welcome to my pastor, dr. jeremiah wright, jr. where's he at? there he is. that's him. >> senator obama then warned of a quote, quiet riot building in the african-american community in the wake of hurricane katrina and other factors which he said the bush administration was neglecting. as we said, this tape isn't new, only part of it is out there, and the hyping of it may have as much to do with politics and little to do with content. we'll see. more is suppos
shout-outs, for example, to reverend jeremiah wright, some other small nuggets that the daily caller thought were exclusive. >> tell you what, i want you to highlight the jeremiah wright issue as well because there were some serious comments made about the reverend jeremiah wright, and when you say shout-out, it was a heck of a shout-out. i mean, my friend, my colleague, my mentor, my -- all sorts of lawedible comments about jeremiah wright, and then the next year, no more jeremiah wright. >> right. yeah, well, also, remember that when he was making that shout-out to jeremiah wright, it wasn't until sometime much later that jeremiah wright really became an issuend sort of blew up and was heavily covered in the media. now, to be honest with you, some democratic strategists will conclude and have said, this isn't that flattering to then senator obama, having his words like this dissected, not flattering at all, but as a political matter, the sense among democrats i've talked to is they believe this is not likely to have that big an impact on the obama campaign, and one strategist said
, then senator obama, praising his controversial pastor reverend jeremiah wright. this was just three months after he cancelled him from giving a prayer in his 2007 presidential announcement. >> i have to give a special shoutout to my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me... he's a friend and a great leader, not just -- [overlapping dialogue] >> please, everybody, give an extraordinary welcome to my pastor, dr. reverend jeremiah wright jr. where's he at? there he is. that's -- that's him. that's him right there. >> greta: now, with this newly surfaced complete video have any impact on the race? former speaker of the house is here, newt gingrich. >> good to be with you. >> greta: i am curious whether you think the complete tapeville any impact whatsoever on the race? >> oh, i think it has some impact. it's a little bit like joe biden saying, they want to put you back in chains. it's a reminder of the depth of dishonesty, the appeals to racism, the factual false hoods that are at the heart of the modern left. what then senator obama said was fac
to a largely black crowd. but, again, after that jeremiah wright situation, the big controversy of his campaign came out and gave a widely praised speech in philadelphia that called for racial reconciliation. he said, look, as a country we have not gotten the issue of race relations right and called for unity and distanced himself from jeremiah wright. officially. so it's complicated as always. >> highly sensitive. >>> the hunt is on along the u.s./mexico border for those responsible for the death of an american border patrol agent. 30-year-old nicholas ivy was killed early yesterday in what is being described as an ambush. another agent was also wounded in the attack. what's unclear is weather ivy's death was the work of one of mexico's drug cartels. he was killed in an area that is notorious for drug trafficking. >>> at least eight wildfires are burning in northwestern minnesota this morning. onditions. one fire is finally under control after destroying about a half dozen homes in the town of carlshead. it burned through 12 square miles and forced the evacuation of half of the houston, includ
was the reverend jeremiah wright. mike emanuel is live in washington. reverand wright became a controversial figure during the 2008 campaign. what did then senator obama say about him in that summer of 2007? >> reporter: he made reference to the trinity church of christ saying that's where he met reverend wright and introduced him to a man named jesus christ and mr. obama praised his long-time pastor. >> i have got to give a special shoutout to my pastor, the guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. he's a friend, and a great leader. so please, everybody, give an extraordinary welcome to my pastor dr. jeremiah wright, the united church of christ. where's he at. there he is. that's him. that's him right there. [applause] >> reporter: earlier in 2007 reverend wright had become a controversial figure and political problem but clearly in front of that audience mr. obama felt comfortable praising his pastor. he compared the response to katrina to the 9/11 attacks and florida. bill: what are they saying about the video surfacing now? >> reporter: the obama campaign says
, angry. >> reporter: the video also features obama extolling his then-reverend, jeremiah wright. >> a guy who puts up with me, counsels me, listens to my wife complain about me. he's a friend and a great leader. >> reporter: the obama campaign points out that in 2007, then-senator obama spoke out quite a bit in the senate on the issue of disaster relief for the gulf coast. and that's true, george. although, he did speak about it a little differently in the senate. george? >> jake, thanks. >>> let's add in david muir, already inside the debate hall. and political contributor, matthew dowd here with me. unlikely mitt romney is going to bring up this tape tonight. but the governor is behind nationally. and especially in the key battleground states. do they think they have to shake things up tonight? >> reporter: they absolutely do, george. i talked to a half-dozen advisers over the next 24 hours. and they agree. they have to establish three things. he has to offer a blistering critique of the president. the second thing, though, is criticism within his own party that he needs to offer more d
obama was a candidate with the jeremiah wright stuff. it's doubling down on incredibly divisive racialized brand of politics that doesn't serve the republicans well this election cycle but really does not serve them well in the long term. this party, i don't see what the future of the republican party is if these are the spokes people, the newt gingrich, the donald trumps of the world. >> you know, gene, it didn't start here, of course. there was an attempt, nixon what he would say about adlai stevenson in the '50s, the red scare was used obviously. they weren't one of us. bill clinton was accused of sneaking off to russia, remember that, back when he ran. he was some sort of red. mike dukakis was a guy that wouldn't pledge allegiance to the united states, somehow a card-carrying member of the aclu. all this dark, kind of referencing. they're not really one of us. but then with the ethnic factor, because he has the african name and he's black, the doubling down on this, well, he's not one of us. >> right. race adds to this, to the armament they're using here. it's a huge factor
to reverend jeremiah wright. this was in may. the "new york times" wrote it saying, quote, do exactly what john mccain would not let us do in 2008. the plans suggested hiring an extremely literate african-american to sell the message and label the president a metrosexual black abe lincoln. >> yeah. listen, i'm not sure exactly -- >> that's a halloween costume. >> i don't know what they mean by the last comment. but george will who i normally respect, this president has enjoyed the numbers that he is now and despite the rags initialized attacks. the reason this deck was disapproved by romney is because they don't need it. they've had the welfare ads and this strategy has been in place in other ways and it was exposed early enough so folks could see the inner workings behind back room door strategy sessions. >> well, it's playing into that stereotype. angry black man. i know some blacks that are angry that he's not more angry. >> how about that and happy birthday, rev. >> thank you. james peterson, ana marie cox, thank you for your time tonight. >> yep. and happy birthday. >> thank you. >>>
, if there was a moment the whole jeremiah wright association and all this racial stuff that's there, if there was a moment that that was going to hurt and sink barack obama politically, it was april of 2008. there was a serious crisis in barack obama's campaign. he delivered a speech on race, a speech to be remembered for years to come and that put the issue to rest for 70%, 80% of the public. but there's this sliver of the public on the right still living in april of 200. it's a real problem for the republican party. when you're a month away from the election and your candidate is losing and this is what you're counting on as the big bombshell, you're out of touch with where the rest of the country is. >> right. jimmy, republicans don't have a lot going for them right now, but they seized on a recent comment by joe biden, who else, who said the middle class has been buried. i wonder if they've overestimated the importance of this statement. take a listen. >> those happens to be the words of the distinguished vice president of the united states, mr. joe biden. no, don't boo. he's th
consider how much focus was placed on reverend jeremiah wright four years ago. i've been a bit surprised the press has been hesitant to talk about things like proxy baptisms. as you know, mitt romney's father-in-law, ann romney's father was a devout atheist. after his death, mitt romney himself performed the posthumous baptism making him a mormon. we've heard a lot about this in the past year. one mormon church baptized anne frank despite the church's promise to not proxy baptize holocaust victims. are you a bit surprised things like that haven't gotten more scrutiny in the press given the attention that was paid to jeremiah wright a few years ago? >> i think back in february, i think it was, there was kind of a lot of scrutiny on proxy baptisms because it came out that like you said, holocaust victims had been getting baptized. and i think that there was even a case where -- i can't remember -- somebody was baptized -- one prominent figure was baptized who wasn't even dead it turned out. proxy baptism for someone
his former pastor, the reverend jeremiah wright. did it make you feel squeamish? what did you think when all of a sudden we're hearing about reverend wright? >> no. look. that's an issue that was litigated and talked about very specifically for a good period of time during the '08 cycle. so i think the american people have made up their minds of who president obama is, what kind of ideas he has about what our country is and where he wants to take it. so i don't think that people will want to relitigate that. the notion that mitt romney's campaign had nothing to do with this i find lacking credibility. when you consider the closeness that matt drudge has to the romney campaign, it's hard to imagine a scenario where there was not some sort of conversation or collusion or even the handoff of the video which is five years old to matt drudge knowing that many people in the media would be led around by matt drudge and cover something they'd already covered five years ago. >> just to be precise, the daily caller website is the one that posted the video, that's tucker carlson's website. it
to this issue that we went through four years ago in the 2008 campaign about reverend jeremiah wright from trinity church in chicago, and here's the penalty now this is before the videos came out this is before the videos came out. the president hadn't seen the videos. how would you talk about your pastor? he was being very complimentary. the republicans are trying to take us back to where we were in 2008, which is just ridiculous. we hashed this out. the guy's been president for four years he has a record to run on. you want to criticize the record, go ahead. but to take us back to this controversy, peter this is just ridiculous. >> i was tuning in and i had a thought, back in the last election we heard rumors that there was the infamous whitey tape that either barack obama or michelle obama was on tape for saying whitey. for half a second i go oh, my gosh, this is the whitey tape and i started watching it and i thought this is it, this is what they've got? we fought this before. >> i don't think anybody's used that word since george jefferson in the early 1980's. [ laughter ] >> welcome
of radicalism in his speech about jeremiah wright. if you look carefully at that speech. it is different than martin luther king jr.'s take on rice in america. barack obama never mentions abraham lincoln and never created all men -- all men are created equal. those are absent from the speech. >> it is a deplate point and you look at the great society now people look at welfare and entitlement system and how had the great society fail . and failed to provide the safety net and are we in a nation where we are experience 50-50 environment. >> that's right. >> half of the country is supporting the other half of the country. is that who we want to be? >> liberalism had an impatience and hostility to the american congressional system, the olderaxoms and principles of the american public. that is a polar working its way out. we are seeing living hosstillity with the constitution and still the legal constitution. it is hard to bridge a gap that is a century old and has been certainly for the past generation deepening. >> which way are we going. i think conservatives is the horse to bet on in the long
on the reverend jeremiah wright who himself made numerous racially incendiary speeches. any fallout from that or is that old news too? >> clearly obviously the campaign is going to suggest that it's old news and, you know, what he said there, and also the tone in which he speaks and the cadence and his accent and everything is clearly something very different from what ever hear out of the rose garden or anything like that. also words he has about reverend wright are exact opposite what says a year later when he denounces the church and leaves his church there. gregg: right. >> i think that it's that sort of disonance what we hear one place and what we hear in another, way he speaks in one place and speak in another, that could be very disconcert fog are a lot of people who got behind him because he was not going to sort of be this divisive figure. gregg: now, charlie, there's another clip. this is from yesterday and this is vice president joe biden, and he basically admits in front of this audience and television cameras that the middle class has been buried under the last four years. o
